Roland Smith – When the Exxon Valdez struck the rocks in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into the water. As the oil made contact with the sea otters, it immediately stuck to their fur. They tried to get the oil off, but the more they groomed, the deeper the oil worked its way into their fur. They needed help – fast!
